HOUSTON, TX — Houston will experience a noticeable shift toward fall weather beginning Friday, Oct. 16, as temperatures drop from near 90 degrees earlier in the week to the lower 70s by Saturday, followed by a return to the 80s early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, a strong cold front will bring cooler air into the Houston area late this week, ending a stretch of unusually warm October temperatures.
Thursday's expected high of 89 degrees will give way to 83 degrees Friday before temperatures fall to around 72 Saturday. Overnight lows could dip into the upper 50s by Saturday night, offering a brief break from the recent warmth.
Friday Winds Signal a Weekend Cooldown The transition begins Friday as north winds increase to 5 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph.
A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms remains possible before 1 p.m., although precipitation chances are limited to 20%.
By Friday night, temperatures should fall to around 61 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
Saturday brings the coolest afternoon of the five day period, with sunshine and a high near 72 degrees.
Temperatures will fall further Saturday night, reaching approximately 57 degrees under mostly clear skies.
The cooler conditions follow a broader weather pattern identified by NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, which expects strong high pressure moving south from Canada to produce substantial temperature changes across portions of the central United States.
While some locations farther north could approach freezing, Houston's forecast remains considerably warmer.
Sunshine Returns Before Another Warmup Sunday begins a gradual rebound, with sunny skies and a high near 77 degrees.
The warming trend continues Monday, when temperatures are expected to reach 83 degrees under partly sunny skies.
By Tuesday, Houston could climb to 85 degrees, representing a 13 degree increase from Saturday's afternoon high.
Rain chances also return early next week, with a 20% chance of showers Monday and a 30% chance Tuesday.
The outlook suggests Houston's fall cooldown will be relatively brief, with the most comfortable conditions arriving over the weekend before warmer temperatures return.
