HOUSTON, TX – Southeast Texas is preparing for its first significant fall cold front of the season, with cooler temperatures, gusty winds and potentially hazardous coastal conditions expected Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston Galveston, the front is expected to move through the region Friday morning, bringing a shift to northerly and northeasterly winds. Rain is possible ahead of the front before cooler, drier air settles across the area.
Weekend Temperatures Could Drop Into the 50s
Saturday and Sunday are forecast to bring daytime highs in the 70s and 80s, with overnight lows falling into the 50s and 60s.
Sunday morning is expected to be the coolest period.
The NWS estimates Houston has a 54% chance of experiencing temperatures below 60 degrees by 7 a.m. Sunday.
Communities farther inland face considerably higher probabilities, including College Station at 91%, Conroe at 96% and Huntsville at 96%.
Coastal locations are less likely to experience the same temperature drop, with Galveston showing just a 6% probability.
Dangerous Marine Conditions Possible
The approaching front could also create hazardous conditions across Gulf waters.
Forecasters expect winds to strengthen Friday night into Saturday, potentially reaching Small Craft Advisory levels.
Offshore seas could build to 5 8 feet, with some areas potentially exceeding 10 feet. Gale conditions are also possible.
Boaters, anglers and coastal residents should monitor updated marine forecasts before heading onto the water.
Drivers may encounter rain ahead of Friday's front, although widespread travel disruptions have not been forecast.
Residents across Greater Houston should prepare for a noticeable change from recent warmer conditions as fall weather arrives this weekend.
