DALLAS FORT WORTH, TX – Strong north winds gusting up to 45 mph are expected across North and Central Texas on Friday, Oct. 16, as a cold front brings cooler temperatures, hazardous boating conditions and an elevated grass fire threat.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, north winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected behind the front, with gusts reaching 45 mph. The strongest winds could make driving difficult for high profile vehicles, particularly on exposed roads.
Boating conditions are also expected to become hazardous for small craft on area lakes as strong winds move through the region Friday.
The National Weather Service is forecasting afternoon highs mainly in the 60s, a noticeable change following the frontal passage.
Dallas Fort Worth is expected to reach 64 degrees Friday, while Sherman and Graham could see highs near 62. Paris is forecast to reach 64, Canton 65 and Palestine 68.
Farther west, Cisco could remain cooler with a high near 58 degrees. Waco is expected to reach 67, while Killeen could climb to 66.
The weather service also highlighted an elevated grass fire threat across Central Texas, including areas near Waco and Killeen.
Strong winds can contribute to the rapid spread of grass fires, particularly where dry vegetation is present. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning and never leave fires unattended.
The weather service also recommends securing loose, lightweight outdoor objects before winds strengthen Friday.
Drivers operating trucks, trailers and other high profile vehicles should be prepared for difficult travel conditions in exposed areas. Boaters should consider postponing trips onto open water while strong winds persist.
Residents across North and Central Texas should prepare for a cooler, windy Friday, with gusts up to 45 mph and elevated fire danger in parts of Central Texas.
