DALLAS, TX — A dramatic temperature shift will bring Dallas its first substantial taste of fall weather this week, with strong northerly winds Friday giving way to a sunny weekend before temperatures climb back into the 80s by Tuesday, Oct. 20.
According to the National Weather Service, Friday's high will reach only 71 degrees, a 20 degree drop from Thursday's expected 91 degrees. North winds around 20 mph could gust as high as 40 mph, making Friday the most unsettled day of the five day period despite partly sunny skies.
The change follows an unusually hot stretch, with Dallas expected to reach 95 degrees Wednesday before a strong cold front moves through the region.
Strong Winds Bring a Sharp Friday Cooldown The National Weather Service's national forecast discussion identifies a strong area of high pressure moving south from Canada as a major driver of cooler conditions across the central United States late this week.
In Dallas, the change becomes especially noticeable Friday as temperatures fall into the lower 70s and gusty north winds replace the recent heat.
Wind gusts could reach 40 mph during the day before easing somewhat overnight, although gusts as high as 35 mph remain possible Friday night.
By early Saturday, temperatures are expected to fall to around 52 degrees, providing a noticeably cooler start to the weekend.
Unlike portions of the central United States where temperatures could approach freezing, the Dallas forecast keeps overnight lows well above the freezing mark.
Sunny Weekend Before Temperatures Rebound Saturday brings sunshine and a high near 70 degrees, followed by another cool night with temperatures dropping to around 51.
Sunday marks the beginning of a steady warming trend, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the middle 70s.
The warmer pattern continues Monday, when Dallas is expected to reach 81 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
By Tuesday, temperatures could climb to 85 degrees, representing a 15 degree increase from Saturday's high.
A slight chance of showers returns Tuesday, but the National Weather Service currently places precipitation chances at just 20%.
For Dallas residents, the extended outlook offers a brief break from unusually warm October conditions before temperatures return to the 80s early next week.
