Corpus Christi, TX – Millions of residents across South Texas could face dangerous rainfall and localized flash flooding this weekend as a slow moving storm system approaches the region. A flood watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, with some communities potentially receiving more than 6 inches of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across much of South Texas, with isolated locations potentially exceeding 6 inches. The Weather Prediction Center forecasts 3 to 5 inches across portions of southern and central Texas, with locally higher amounts possible.
The approaching storm system is expected to slow significantly, allowing heavy rainfall to persist across the region into early next week.
Saturday Night Through Sunday Morning
The heaviest rainfall is expected to begin Saturday night across the Rio Grande Plains and Brush Country, including communities near Laredo, Cotulla and Freer.
By Sunday afternoon and evening, heavier rainfall is forecast to shift eastward toward the Coastal Plains, affecting areas near Alice, Kingsville, Beeville and Corpus Christi.
Flooding Concerns Continue Into Monday
Forecasters warn that repeated periods of heavy rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems, particularly in urban neighborhoods, low lying roads and areas historically prone to flooding.
Localized flash flooding could develop Saturday night through Monday, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions and making some roads impassable.
Although much of the rainfall may benefit drought affected communities, excessive rainfall over a short period could create dangerous conditions.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts, avoid driving through flooded roadways and prepare for possible travel disruptions throughout the weekend.
The flood watch currently extends through Monday morning, although additional rainfall remains possible as the storm system lingers near the region.
