Corpus Christi, TX – Hurricane Isaias is expected to remain well east of the Middle Texas Coast this weekend, but dangerous rip currents, increasing waves and a growing coastal flooding threat could affect coastal areas Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 10.
The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi said Thursday morning that Isaias strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane overnight and continues moving toward the northern Gulf Coast.
Despite the storm's distance from South Texas, forecasters warned that hazardous marine conditions could develop across western Gulf waters.
Seas are expected to increase to 6 to 9 feet Friday and Saturday across the open Gulf waters, creating potentially dangerous conditions for marine activities.
The weather service also highlighted a high rip current risk this weekend. Rip currents can carry swimmers away from shore, even when weather conditions along the beach appear calm.
Coastal flooding concerns are also increasing as tidal influences combine with wind driven water levels. The weather service did not specify expected flooding depths or identify particular communities where flooding is most likely.
The latest forecast places Isaias well east of the Middle Texas Coast, with limited direct impacts expected across western Gulf waters.
However, the hurricane's distant position does not eliminate the potential for hazardous surf and coastal conditions.
Beachgoers are encouraged to swim near lifeguards, monitor posted warnings and check local beach forecasts before entering the water.
Boaters should also monitor updated marine forecasts as seas increase heading into the weekend.
The National Weather Service emphasized that distant hurricanes can generate deadly rip currents and waves far from the storm's center.
Residents and visitors along the Middle Texas Coast should expect worsening marine conditions Friday and Saturday, with rip currents and possible coastal flooding remaining the primary concerns as Isaias approaches the northern Gulf Coast.
