Houston, TX – A Flood Watch is in effect northwest of Houston through Friday evening as repeated showers and thunderstorms could produce heavy rain and rapid runoff.
According to the National Weather Service Houston Galveston, the watch covers Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado and Washington counties. Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected through Friday.
The heaviest storms could produce rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour. The weather service said rapid runoff from intense rainfall could create flooding problems.
Heavy rain may cause flooding along roads and in low lying areas, rivers and creeks. The NWS urged drivers to use particular caution at night, when flooded roads can be more difficult to recognize.
The watch includes the College Station and Brenham areas, while the NWS graphic shows Houston, Galveston and much of the immediate Houston metropolitan area outside the Flood Watch as of Thursday afternoon.
A Flood Watch means flooding is possible within the designated counties, not that flooding is occurring throughout the watch area. More targeted warnings could be issued if flooding becomes imminent or is detected.
Drivers should never attempt to cross a flooded roadway because water depth and road conditions can be difficult to determine. The weather service advises motorists to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Residents in the five county watch area should monitor conditions through Friday evening as additional showers and thunderstorms develop, particularly if traveling after dark.
