Austin, TX – A Flood Watch has expanded eastward across South Central Texas as additional heavy rain could produce flooding through Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service Austin San Antonio, the Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, across the I 35 corridor and portions of the Hill Country and Coastal Plains.
Additional rainfall of 1 to 4 inches is possible, with isolated totals reaching 6 inches. The weather service said those amounts could cause rivers, creeks, streams and other low lying or flood prone locations to flood quickly.
The most immediate heavy rain threat Thursday afternoon and early evening is across the inland Coastal Plains, where 1 to 4 inches with isolated totals up to 6 inches are possible.
Later Thursday night, heavy rainfall could redevelop farther west, including areas along and west of the I 35 corridor.
The watch area shown by the NWS includes Austin and San Antonio along with communities such as Georgetown, Kyle, New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Uvalde, Hondo, Pearsall and Gonzales.
A Flood Watch means flooding is possible within the designated area; it does not mean flooding is occurring everywhere covered by the watch.
Travelers should remain alert for changing road conditions and avoid attempting to cross flooded roadways. The weather service advises drivers who encounter flooding to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Residents across the watch area should continue monitoring forecasts and any subsequent flood warnings as additional rounds of heavy rain remain possible through Friday.
