Amarillo, TX – Mostly quiet, warm weather is expected across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles through the weekend, but forecasters are monitoring a potential system that could bring rain back to the region late Monday night into Tuesday, Oct. 13.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the next six to seven days will feature plenty of sunshine and above average temperatures, along with some breezy conditions this weekend.
Confidence in the details of next week's potential rain remains limited. The NWS said there are increasing signals for a system to bring precipitation beginning late Monday night into Tuesday, but several important factors remain uncertain.
Forecasters are monitoring how much moisture will be available and the eventual track of a western low pressure system. The system would need to be positioned favorably to bring rain across both the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.
The potential for thunderstorms to become severe is also being monitored, but the NWS has not indicated that severe storms are expected at this point.
A Climate Prediction Center outlook valid Oct. 11 15 favors above normal precipitation across the region. For Amarillo, the graphic shows a 39% probability of above normal precipitation during the period, compared with 33% for near normal and 28% for below normal precipitation.
That CPC outlook represents probabilities over a multi day period and does not specify rainfall amounts or guarantee rain in Amarillo.
Residents should expect mostly quiet conditions through the weekend while watching for forecast updates on the possible early week system. Details on rainfall amounts, storm coverage and any severe weather potential should become clearer as the system approaches.
