Amarillo, TX – Residents across the Texas Panhandle face a warm and windy Monday, October 12, with temperatures approaching the lower 90s and wind gusts potentially reaching 40 mph before isolated thunderstorms develop during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, with occasional gusts reaching 40 mph. Forecasters also indicate a limited chance of thunderstorms, primarily across the southern and central Texas Panhandle.
Strong Winds and 90 Degree Heat Monday
Afternoon temperatures will climb well into the upper 80s and lower 90s across the region.
Amarillo is forecast to reach 88 degrees, while Borger could climb to 92 degrees. Pampa, Canadian and Wheeler are expected to reach approximately 90 to 91 degrees.
Farther north, Perryton could reach 90 degrees, while Beaver, Oklahoma, may climb to 93 degrees.
Gusty southwest winds could make driving more challenging for high profile vehicles, particularly along exposed highways and open stretches of roadway.
Isolated Thunderstorms Possible This Evening
Forecasters are monitoring a boundary that could help trigger scattered shower and thunderstorm development later Monday afternoon and evening.
The greatest potential extends across portions of the southern and central Texas Panhandle, including areas near Amarillo, Dumas and Borger.
Rain chances remain relatively low, generally around 10% to 20% in the highlighted areas.
Any thunderstorms that develop could produce lightning and locally gusty winds, although widespread storms are not currently expected.
Residents planning outdoor activities should monitor changing skies and move indoors if thunder is heard.
Drivers should also remain alert for sudden wind gusts and brief rainfall that could affect visibility.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to monitor updated forecasts as storm development and coverage remain uncertain.
