Amarillo, TX – The Texas Panhandle could turn windy next week as a developing Rockies storm approaches the High Plains, with the system’s eventual track determining whether the region stays warm and dry or gets a shot at cooler, wetter weather.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, is monitoring the developing system for roughly Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12 14. Forecasters have increasing confidence that accumulating snow will occur along Colorado’s Continental Divide, but the storm’s track, strength and timing remain uncertain.
For the Texas Panhandle, that track could make a substantial difference.
If the storm remains farther north as it crosses the Rockies, the Panhandle could stay on the warmer and drier side of the system. Stronger winds could accompany that pattern as the storm organizes east of the mountains.
A storm digging farther south could instead increase the opportunity for cooler temperatures and precipitation across parts of the southern High Plains.
Those outcomes are possibilities rather than a specific Texas forecast. The Pueblo outlook does not provide wind speeds, rainfall probabilities or temperature projections for Amarillo or the Texas Panhandle, and it does not indicate snow for the region.
The strongest winter weather signal remains well northwest of Texas in Colorado’s mountains, where accumulating snow is increasingly likely. The NWS also notes that winter weather in the Rockies during October is not unusual, particularly at higher elevations.
For the southern High Plains, the developing story is less about snow and more about how far south the storm digs before emerging from the Rockies .
Readers around Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle should monitor upcoming National Weather Service forecasts. As Oct. 12 14 gets closer, forecasters should be able to better determine whether the region faces strong, dry winds or a cooler pattern with increasing rain chances .
