Amarillo, TX – Residents across the Texas Panhandle should prepare for a windy and noticeably colder Thursday, with north winds potentially gusting up to 40 mph in localized areas as a cold front brings scattered rain and thunderstorms to the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the strongest wind gusts are expected between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, with sustained breezy conditions developing behind an approaching cold front.
Forecasters expect widespread gusts between 25 and 35 mph, although isolated locations could experience stronger winds reaching 35 to 40 mph.
The strongest winds will initially develop across the northwestern Panhandles early Thursday before spreading southeast during the afternoon.
Communities including Amarillo, Dumas, Dalhart, Borger and Pampa could experience gusty conditions, with the greatest wind speeds varying by location.
Thursday afternoon temperatures are forecast mainly in the lower to middle 50s, including approximately 53 degrees in Amarillo and 55 degrees in Dalhart.
However, strong north winds will make conditions feel considerably colder.
The National Weather Service indicates that apparent temperatures could remain in the upper 30s to middle 40s across much of the Panhandles throughout the day.
Rain chances will also increase Wednesday night into Thursday, particularly across the northern and eastern Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.
Some locations near Beaver, Oklahoma, could see precipitation probabilities exceeding 70%, while other areas have lower chances.
Most rainfall accumulations are expected to remain below one quarter inch.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 40, Interstate 27 and exposed rural highways should remain alert for sudden crosswinds, particularly those operating high profile vehicles.
Residents are also encouraged to secure lightweight outdoor objects that could be displaced by stronger gusts.
Winds are expected to diminish around sunset Thursday, although temperatures will remain chilly heading into the evening.
