Amarillo, TX – October typically brings the first 32 degree freeze to much of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, but the timing varies considerably by location.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, climatological data show the first freeze generally arrives earliest in the northwestern Panhandles before the typical timing progresses southeastward. The agency shared the historical information as cooler, cloudy and drizzly conditions offered an early taste of fall.
The map is climatology, not a forecast for a specific freeze this October.
Historically, the first 32 degree freeze can occur between Oct. 1 and Oct. 10 around Boise City in the far western Oklahoma Panhandle.
For locations including Dalhart and Stratford, the climatological range shifts generally into Oct. 11 20. Much of the central and eastern Panhandles, including areas around Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Perryton, Guymon and Beaver, falls within an Oct. 21 31 range on the NWS map.
Farther southeast, areas near Wellington fall into a later climatological window of Nov. 1 10. The boundaries are broad historical ranges, and the actual first freeze can arrive earlier or later in any individual year.
A freeze occurs when temperatures fall to 32 degrees or lower. The timing is important for gardeners, farmers and others with freeze sensitive vegetation or outdoor equipment.
While the NWS noted that the first freeze historically occurs during October for most of the Panhandles, the graphic does not establish when temperatures will reach freezing this year. Residents should monitor upcoming National Weather Service forecasts as October progresses for any specific freeze threat.
