Abilene, TX – Halloween weekend could get off to a stormy start across West Central Texas as rain chances climb sharply Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, with some communities facing precipitation probabilities as high as 70% just one day before Halloween.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, mainly dry and seasonably warm conditions will continue through the middle of next week before an approaching upper level weather system brings increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms.
Friday currently carries the highest precipitation probabilities, reaching 70% around Haskell, 65% in San Angelo, Ballinger and Sweetwater, and 60% in Abilene.
Other communities, including Brownwood, Brady, Coleman, Junction and Ozona, also face precipitation chances near 60% Friday.
Before the wetter pattern develops, temperatures will remain unusually warm for late October, with afternoon highs generally reaching the upper 70s and lower 80s.
Abilene could reach 83 degrees Wednesday, while San Angelo is also forecast to hit 83 degrees.
A smaller opportunity for precipitation arrives Monday night into Tuesday, with the weather service highlighting a low chance before the more significant late week system approaches.
Halloween Weekend: Will Storms Affect Outdoor Plans?
The timing of the approaching system could become important for families preparing for Halloween celebrations Saturday, Oct. 31.
Although Friday's forecast shows increasing thunderstorm chances, the published outlook ends Friday, meaning specific Halloween night conditions have not yet been established.
Residents planning trick or treating, outdoor festivals or other weekend activities should monitor updated forecasts as the timing of the approaching system becomes clearer.
Temperatures are also expected to cool somewhat by Friday, with highs generally falling into the lower to middle 70s.
The National Weather Service will continue refining precipitation probabilities and storm timing as Halloween approaches.
