Abilene, TX – A dramatic weather change is approaching West Central Texas this week, with temperatures reaching the mid 90s Tuesday before increasing rain chances and a Thursday cold front bring much cooler conditions heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, temperatures will remain unusually warm Tuesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 14, before a cold front moves across the region Thursday, October 15.
High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to reach 94 degrees in Abilene, 95 in Ballinger and Sweetwater, and 94 in San Angelo.
Rain chances increase Wednesday and Thursday, particularly across northern and western counties.
Sweetwater faces a 70% chance of precipitation Wednesday, increasing to 90% Thursday. Abilene's rain chances rise from 55% Wednesday to 75% Thursday, while Ozona could see an 80% chance Thursday.
The weather service expects the greatest rain potential Thursday into Thursday night, with precipitation chances decreasing farther east.
By Friday, October 16, the region will experience a substantial temperature drop.
Abilene's forecast high falls from 85 degrees Thursday to just 67 Friday, while Sweetwater drops from 81 to 64 degrees.
San Angelo is expected to cool from 87 Thursday to 69 Friday, with gusty north winds accompanying the colder air.
The change will be especially noticeable for residents accustomed to the early week heat, with afternoon temperatures dropping roughly 25 to 30 degrees in several communities compared with Tuesday.
Overnight temperatures could fall into the upper 40s and lower 50s Saturday morning, October 17.
Drivers should prepare for potentially wet roads Wednesday and Thursday, particularly where showers or thunderstorms develop.
The forecast shows mostly dry conditions Saturday, with afternoon highs generally in the 60s and lower 70s.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts as the timing and coverage of rainfall become clearer.
