Nashville, TN – Tennessee Valley officials are preparing for possible heavy rainfall and rising water this weekend as Tropical Storm Isaias moves north from the Gulf of Mexico and potentially toward the region.
According to the Tennessee Valley Authority, current forecasts bring the tropical system toward the western portion of the Tennessee Valley , although the storm's exact track and eventual rainfall totals remain uncertain.
The National Hurricane Center's Wednesday morning forecast shows Isaias strengthening as it moves through the Gulf. The projected path takes the system toward the central Gulf Coast before continuing inland Friday night into Saturday.
By early Sunday, the forecast cone extends across portions of Tennessee, Kentucky and surrounding states. The National Hurricane Center cautions that hazardous conditions can occur outside the forecast cone and that the cone does not represent the storm's overall size.
TVA said it is already in its annual fall drawdown, which provides additional reservoir storage capacity to help manage periods of heavy rainfall and reduce flooding risks.
Officials are also releasing additional water at dams in the western Tennessee Valley to lower lake levels ahead of the potential rainfall.
TVA said it will continue monitoring updated forecasts and adjusting river operations as conditions develop.
Because Isaias remains several days away from potentially affecting the Valley, changes in its track could significantly alter which communities experience the heaviest rainfall and greatest flooding threat.
Residents across Tennessee and surrounding portions of the Valley should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and local National Weather Service forecasts through the weekend, particularly if traveling or living near flood prone areas.
