Nashville, TN – Above normal temperatures are favored across the Tennessee Valley next week, with Tennessee, northern Alabama, northern Mississippi and southern Kentucky positioned within a broad warm pattern for October 20 24. The rainfall outlook is less consistent, with western portions of the region showing a modest wetter than normal tendency while eastern communities face weaker precipitation signals.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the six to 10 day temperature and precipitation outlooks issued Wednesday, October 14, cover Tuesday, October 20, through Saturday, October 24. The temperature map shows above normal conditions favored throughout the Tennessee Valley, while the precipitation outlook places the region near a transition between wetter probabilities to the west and near normal or drier probabilities farther east.
Warmer temperatures favored throughout the valley Tennessee lies within a broad area of above normal temperature probabilities, generally ranging from 60% to 70% across much of the state.
Western and middle Tennessee, including Memphis and Nashville, show a substantial warm signal. Eastern Tennessee also favors above normal temperatures, although the probability shading weakens somewhat toward the Appalachian Mountains.
Northern Alabama shares the warmer than normal outlook, with much of the region falling within NOAA's 50% to 60% probability category. Huntsville, Florence and surrounding communities are positioned within this broader warm pattern.
Northern Mississippi also favors above normal temperatures, with probabilities generally ranging from 60% to 70% across portions of the state.
Southern Kentucky shares the warm signal, particularly around Bowling Green and communities near the Tennessee border.
These probabilities describe the likelihood of temperatures averaging above historical normals during the five day period. They do not predict specific afternoon highs or guarantee unusually warm conditions every day.
Rainfall probabilities show an east west divide The precipitation outlook is more geographically complicated.
Western Tennessee and northwestern Mississippi lie near a transition from modest above normal precipitation probabilities to near normal conditions. The wetter signal is stronger farther west toward Arkansas and the central Plains.
Middle Tennessee, including Nashville, generally falls within NOAA's near normal precipitation category, indicating no strong preference for wetter or drier than normal conditions.
Eastern Tennessee approaches the below normal precipitation area extending across Kentucky and portions of the Appalachian region.
Northern Alabama largely falls within near normal precipitation shading, while the northernmost sections are closer to the transition toward below normal probabilities.
Northern Mississippi also shows mostly near normal precipitation probabilities, with a modest wetter tendency toward the western edge of the region.
What the outlook means for residents The warm temperature outlook could provide favorable conditions for outdoor activities, fall festivals and travel across much of the Tennessee Valley.
However, the precipitation outlook does not support a regionwide dry weather forecast.
Residents in Memphis, Nashville, Huntsville and Birmingham may experience different rainfall patterns even while sharing the same general above normal temperature tendency.
The strongest takeaway is that warmer than normal temperatures are favored across the region, but precipitation expectations remain less certain and vary from west to east.
Will this warmer pattern extend your outdoor fall plans, or are you ready for cooler November weather?
