Nashville, TN – Tennessee's first full week of November could bring two very different versions of autumn weather: relatively mild conditions in the state's lower elevations and the possibility of freezing temperatures high in the Great Smoky Mountains.
For travelers planning trips to the mountains, that elevation difference matters as the winter season approaches.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, outlooks issued Wednesday, Oct. 28, cover Thursday, Nov. 5, through Wednesday, Nov. 11, and provide broad probabilities for temperature and precipitation patterns.
The available guidance does not establish a specific Tennessee snowstorm or forecast accumulating snow in the Smokies during that period.
Why the Smokies Can Turn Wintry First
The highest elevations of Great Smoky Mountains National Park can experience substantially colder conditions than nearby Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville.
Areas around Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome, officially renamed Kuwohi, are particularly exposed to freezing temperatures and early season winter precipitation.
When cold air and moisture arrive together, snow can develop at higher elevations while rain falls in surrounding valleys.
However, no such event has been confirmed for Nov. 5 11.
What About Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis?
Knoxville, Chattanooga and other eastern Tennessee communities can experience chilly November nights, but their conditions often differ sharply from those at nearby mountain summits.
Across Middle Tennessee, Nashville, Murfreesboro and Clarksville generally have a lower early November snowfall risk than the highest Appalachian elevations.
Farther west, Memphis and Jackson typically experience milder early November conditions, although passing cold fronts can still produce notable temperature changes.
Mountain Travel Deserves Attention
U.S. Highway 441 through Newfound Gap is particularly sensitive to freezing temperatures, snow and ice when winter weather develops.
Road conditions can change quickly with elevation, and mountain routes may face restrictions during winter storms.
The current NOAA outlook does not establish road closures, snowfall totals or specific icing hazards for Nov. 5 11.
Travelers should monitor National Weather Service forecasts and Great Smoky Mountains National Park road updates before heading into higher elevations.
For now, mountain snow remains a seasonal possibility rather than a confirmed forecast for Tennessee during November 5 11 .
