Nashville, TN – A 24 year old passenger was killed early Sunday after a Toyota Camry left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and crossed all lanes of Interstate 65 North before striking a concrete median, Nashville police said.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department , the approximately 2 a.m. crash on Sunday, Sept. 27, occurred as the Camry traveled on Briley Parkway approaching the split at I 65 and Dickerson Pike.
Police identified the passenger who died as Austin Franklin, 24 .
The department said its preliminary investigation indicates Franklin and the 20 year old female driver were involved in an argument before the crash.
According to police, the driver reported that Franklin grabbed the steering wheel during the argument, causing the Camry to turn to the right and leave the roadway. Investigators said the vehicle then traveled down an embankment and crossed the northbound lanes of I 65 before hitting the concrete median.
Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The 20 year old driver was transported to Skyline Medical Center following the crash. Police reported that she was in stable condition.
The department described its findings as preliminary, meaning investigators were still working to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Police did not announce any charges in the information released Sunday or provide additional details about the driver's injuries.
The crash occurred near one of Nashville's major interstate connections, where Briley Parkway meets I 65 and the Dickerson Pike corridor.
