Nashville, TN – Drivers across portions of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau could encounter significantly reduced visibility Monday morning, Oct. 12, as clearing skies create conditions favorable for fog development during the Columbus Day holiday.
According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, skies are expected to clear from west to east Sunday afternoon and evening. Forecast probability maps highlight the potential for visibility to fall to half a mile or less in several communities, particularly east of Nashville.
Highest Fog Risk Across Cumberland Plateau
Cookeville faces a 73% probability of visibility dropping to half a mile or less, among the highest percentages shown in the forecast.
Monticello has a 63% probability, while Crossville stands at 55% and Lafayette at 52%.
Farther south, Tullahoma has a 51% probability, while Athens faces a 57% chance.
The risk is lower across portions of central and western Middle Tennessee.
Nashville has a 25% probability, Murfreesboro stands at 19%, and Columbia has a 10% chance.
Clarksville has just a 5% probability, according to the forecast graphic.
Monday Morning Travel Could Be Affected
Fog could create hazardous driving conditions where visibility becomes significantly reduced, especially along highways and rural roads.
Motorists traveling Interstate 40 through the Cookeville and Crossville areas should remain alert for rapidly changing visibility.
Other routes across the Cumberland Plateau and surrounding communities may also experience localized fog.
The National Weather Service advises drivers encountering dense fog to use low beam headlights, reduce speed and allow additional distance between vehicles.
High beam headlights should be avoided because they can reflect off fog and make visibility worse.
Monitor Conditions Before Leaving
Fog development and visibility can vary considerably over short distances, meaning conditions may be clear in one community while nearby roads experience reduced visibility.
Residents planning early Columbus Day travel should check local forecasts and current road conditions before departing.
