Nashville, TN – Tennessee is no stranger to warm weather in October, but the week of Oct. 12 18 is favored to run even warmer than normal for this point in the season, while precipitation also leans above normal.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, favors above normal temperatures across Tennessee during the seven day period. Above normal precipitation is also favored.
The temperature signal is relative to what Tennessee normally experiences in mid October. Because southern states typically remain warmer later into the fall than areas farther north, an above normal outlook should not be interpreted as unusual summerlike heat.
Instead, the outlook suggests the week’s average temperature has better odds of finishing on the warm side of Tennessee’s mid October normals.
From Memphis and Nashville to Knoxville and Chattanooga, warm afternoons could still be followed by noticeably cooler nights. The CPC outlook does not provide specific daily highs or lows, making it too early to determine the magnitude of those temperature swings.
Rain could also interrupt the warmer pattern. Above normal precipitation is favored during Oct. 12 18, but the outlook does not identify specific rainy days, rainfall totals or individual storm systems. Several dry periods could still occur during the week.
Unlike states farther north, widespread frost is less central to Tennessee’s overall outlook at this range. Colder higher elevations and sheltered locations could eventually warrant monitoring, but no specific frost threat can be established from the CPC map alone.
For now, Tennessee should expect a warmer than average mid October pattern with a wetter lean . Daily temperatures and the timing of any rain should become clearer as Oct. 12 moves into shorter range National Weather Service forecasts.
