Nashville, TN – A 73 year old man is dead and a 7 year old child was critically injured following a head on collision on Whites Creek Pike in Nashville, according to police, who released additional details Friday about the deadly crash.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department , the collision happened Thursday, October 29, at approximately 5:20 p.m. in the 7900 block of Whites Creek Pike in Davidson County.
The driver who died was identified as Nicholas J. Mulder, 73, of Springfield, Tennessee.
Police Describe Head On Collision
Investigators said Mulder was traveling northbound in a 2019 Ford Fiesta when his vehicle crossed the double yellow centerline for reasons that remain unknown.
The Fiesta then collided head on with a southbound 2015 Ford Escape.
Mulder died at the scene.
A 7 year old child riding in the Escape suffered critical injuries.
The Escape's 25 year old male driver and 26 year old female front seat passenger sustained injuries that police described as non life threatening.
All three occupants of the Escape were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
Preliminary Cause Under Investigation
Police said the preliminary cause of the collision was Mulder's failure to maintain his lane of travel.
Investigators reported no indicators of impairment involving either driver.
Authorities also believe all occupants of both vehicles were restrained when the collision occurred.
The police department has not released additional details explaining why the Fiesta crossed into oncoming traffic.
The child's condition beyond the initial report of critical injuries was not provided in Friday's announcement.
The fatal crash occurred along Whites Creek Pike, a roadway connecting northern Davidson County communities with the Nashville area.
Motorists traveling the corridor are reminded to remain alert, maintain their lanes and allow adequate distance between vehicles.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's findings remain preliminary as the investigation continues.
