Memphis, TN – An unusual October warmup is bringing summerlike heat back to parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas this week, with heat index values expected to reach or exceed 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday before cooler air arrives Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, temperatures will climb into the 90s across much of the Mid South through at least Thursday, while increasing humidity makes conditions feel even hotter.
The forecast issued Monday, Oct. 12, shows Memphis reaching a maximum heat index of 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by 93 degrees Thursday.
Jackson, Tennessee, could experience heat index values of 96 degrees Tuesday and 98 degrees Wednesday. Dyersburg is forecast to reach 100 degrees Wednesday, while Covington could see 101 degrees.
Parts of Arkansas and Mississippi could experience even more intense conditions.
Jonesboro and Kennett, Missouri, are forecast to reach heat index values of 102 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday. Forrest City, Arkansas, could reach 100 degrees both days.
In Mississippi, Tunica could experience a heat index of 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, while Corinth could reach 97 degrees Wednesday. Oxford is forecast to reach 93 degrees Wednesday.
The combination of heat and humidity could create uncomfortable conditions for outdoor workers, students participating in after school activities and residents spending extended periods outside.
Residents should drink plenty of water, take breaks in shaded or air conditioned locations and check on older adults and others vulnerable to heat related illness.
Relief is expected by Friday, Oct. 16.
The Weather Service forecasts a significant drop in apparent temperatures by the end of the week, with Friday heat index values falling into the upper 60s and 70s across many communities.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts as the brief period of potentially dangerous October heat approaches.
