Memphis, TN – Some of the coldest temperatures of the fall season are expected across western Tennessee and the surrounding Mid South early Sunday, October 18, with patchy frost possible as overnight readings fall into the upper 30s.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, clear skies and chilly temperatures could allow frost to develop in portions of the region late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Forecasters say a Frost Advisory may become necessary in some communities, although the Saturday morning update did not announce one.
Coldest Temperatures of Fall Expected Sunday
The National Weather Service expects Sunday morning to bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far across parts of the Mid South.
Temperatures falling into the upper 30s could support patchy frost, particularly in colder, sheltered locations where surface temperatures drop below the surrounding air temperature.
The agency's frost probability map shows varying levels of risk across western Tennessee, northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas.
Humboldt, Tennessee, has an estimated 44% probability of frost development, while Jackson is near 35%.
Memphis has a lower estimated probability of approximately 20%, according to the forecast graphic.
Frost Could Threaten Sensitive Plants
Even without widespread freezing temperatures, patchy frost can damage sensitive vegetation, including gardens, flowers and certain outdoor plants.
Residents should consider covering vulnerable plants or moving potted vegetation indoors Saturday evening.
Pet owners should also prepare for chilly overnight conditions, particularly for animals spending extended periods outdoors.
Will a Frost Advisory Be Issued?
The National Weather Service says a Frost Advisory may be warranted for portions of the Mid South as temperatures approach the upper 30s.
However, frost is not guaranteed at every location, and the probability varies considerably across the region.
Residents in Shelby County, Tennessee, and surrounding communities should monitor updated forecasts through Saturday evening as forecasters refine the overnight temperature outlook.
