Memphis, TN – An unusually hot October weather pattern will continue across the Mid South through midweek, with temperatures approaching record highs before gusty winds and lower humidity create potentially dangerous fire weather conditions Friday, October 16.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, temperatures Wednesday, October 14, and Thursday, October 15, are expected to reach the lower to middle 90s across portions of western Tennessee, eastern Arkansas and northern Mississippi, approximately 15 degrees above normal.
Memphis is forecast to reach 91 degrees both days, while nearby Jackson, Tennessee, could reach 90 degrees. Farther south, Tunica, Mississippi, could climb to 94 degrees, with similar temperatures expected around Clarksdale.
Forecasters say record high temperatures are possible before a noticeable cooldown arrives late in the workweek.
By Friday, October 16, afternoon highs are expected to fall into the upper 60s to lower 80s across much of the region.
However, the changing weather pattern will bring another concern: elevated fire weather potential.
The National Weather Service has identified a corridor extending through eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee and portions of northwest Mississippi where volatile fire conditions could develop Friday.
Relative humidity could drop to 30% to 40%, while sustained winds reach 10 to 20 mph, with gusts approaching 30 mph.
The agency's outlook indicates a 40% to 69% probability of critical fire weather conditions within the highlighted area.
Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities that generate sparks, properly extinguish cigarettes and matches, and follow local burning restrictions.
Equipment such as lawn mowers and other machinery can also create ignition hazards under dry, windy conditions.
More seasonal temperatures are expected over the weekend, with Memphis forecast to reach approximately 66 degrees Saturday, October 17, before warming again early next week.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as Friday's fire weather threat approaches.
