Crossville, TN – A Cumberland County High School student has been charged after allegedly making statements that authorities said raised concerns about a potential threat of mass violence Wednesday.
According to a joint Sept. 30 release from the Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office, Crossville Police Department and Cumberland County Schools, the statements were made to school officials and law enforcement, prompting an immediate investigation.
Members of the District Threat Response Team, including Crossville police, sheriff’s deputies, Tennessee Office of Safety and Homeland Security personnel and school officials, responded to assess the situation and gather information.
Authorities said the School Threat Assessment Team was able to contain the situation while investigators worked to determine whether there was an immediate danger to students or staff.
No weapons were found, and no students were ever in danger , according to the joint statement.
Officials said Cumberland County High School was able to continue normal operations without interruption, and a lockdown was not required.
The juvenile suspect was charged under Tennessee Code Annotated 39 16 517 , which addresses threats of mass violence on school property. Because the suspect is a juvenile, officials did not release the student’s name.
The charge is an allegation, and the juvenile has not been found guilty.
Sheriff Casey Cox, Crossville Police Chief Jessie Brooks and Cumberland County Schools Director Rebecca Farley jointly issued the release.
Authorities are encouraging students, staff and community members to report suspicious behavior or statements that could indicate a possible threat involving schools or other public buildings.
Officials said every reported threat will be investigated as part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety across Cumberland County schools.
