Nashville, Tennessee – Heat index values could reach 109 degrees in parts of Middle Tennessee Tuesday, making the midday and afternoon hours especially risky for outdoor workers, students, athletes and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, Tuesday will be the hottest day of another mainly dry, above normal week. Clarksville could reach a heat index of 109, while Nashville reaches 106, Columbia 105 and Murfreesboro 105. Most afternoon highs this week will range from 88 to 98 degrees.
The heat will persist beyond Tuesday. Nashville's maximum heat index remains at 106 Wednesday and 104 Thursday before falling to 101 Friday and 96 Saturday. Clarksville could remain at 107 Wednesday and 105 Thursday.
Residents should drink plenty of water, reduce outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and spend the hottest part of the day in an air conditioned location. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Communities farther east will see somewhat lower values, with Cookeville reaching a maximum heat index near 100 Tuesday and Crossville around 95.
Meaningful relief may not arrive until next weekend or early next week, so additional heat advisories could follow if conditions warrant.
