Arlington, TN – A manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies triggered a precautionary lockdown at Arlington Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 28, before Shelby County deputies arrested a 21 year old man wanted on multiple felony warrants.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded around 12:20 p.m. to an armed disturbance at a basketball court on Airline Road near Dr. Logan Street.
Although deputies could not locate the original caller, investigators identified Miguel Carranza, 21, as a person of interest with outstanding arrest warrants.
Authorities said Carranza was wanted on multiple felony allegations, including aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and domestic assault.
Deputies began searching the surrounding neighborhoods after allegedly spotting Carranza several times, including in a wooded area behind the Little Caesars restaurant on Airline Road.
When authorities observed him running toward Thunderbird Drive, near Arlington Elementary School, they contacted Arlington Community Schools.
The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution to protect students and staff.
The search expanded across the area, with deputies reportedly spotting Carranza near Thunderbird Drive and Douglass Road, then again along Polk Street.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Memphis Police Department aviation unit, multiple Sheriff's Office divisions and members of the public assisted in the search.
Investigators eventually received a tip from a resident concerning Brockwell Road near Chester Street.
Around 5:45 p.m., deputies located Carranza in a wooded area near a church at Douglass Street and Chester Street.
Authorities said deputies pursued and apprehended him without incident, ending the search more than five hours after the initial disturbance call.
Carranza was charged with four counts of aggravated assault, evading official detention and resisting official detention.
The Sheriff's Office did not report any injuries during the arrest or specify how long the school lockdown lasted.
The incident remains a significant public safety event for Arlington, a Shelby County community in the Memphis metropolitan area.
