Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across southeastern South Dakota could experience a noticeably colder end to the week as temperatures drop toward freezing, bringing the potential for frost Saturday morning after several days of relatively mild fall weather.
According to the National Weather Service NWS Sioux Falls office, temperatures will remain near seasonal averages early this week before a cooler weather pattern moves into the region Thursday and Friday, October 15 16.
Daytime highs Tuesday are expected to range from 59 to 67 degrees, with overnight lows between 39 and 45 degrees.
Wednesday will bring similar conditions, with highs reaching 61 to 65 degrees before rain chances return late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
The incoming weather system will introduce cooler air, gradually pushing temperatures below seasonal averages as the weekend approaches.
Thursday's highs are forecast between 59 and 63 degrees, with overnight lows falling into the upper 30s and lower 40s.
By Friday, October 16, daytime temperatures are expected to reach only 54 to 57 degrees across the forecast region.
Breezy conditions are also anticipated Friday as cooler air continues moving into the area.
The most significant concern arrives early Saturday morning, October 17.
Forecasters expect overnight temperatures to fall between 32 and 35 degrees in some locations, creating conditions favorable for frost development.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants, gardens or late season vegetation may want to monitor updated forecasts and consider protective measures before Friday night.
Saturday afternoon should bring some improvement, with daytime highs recovering to between 59 and 66 degrees under generally sunny skies.
The NWS has not indicated that a widespread freeze is guaranteed, and the exact locations experiencing frost will depend on overnight temperatures and local conditions.
Residents across the Sioux Falls region should continue monitoring forecasts as the potential frost period approaches.
