Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across southeastern South Dakota should prepare for a changing weather pattern this week, with widespread rain arriving Wednesday night, Oct. 14, followed by temperatures potentially falling near freezing early Saturday, Oct. 17.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a few sprinkles are possible Tuesday, Oct. 13, especially north of Interstate 90, before a more organized period of rainfall spreads across the region Wednesday night into Thursday.
Rain Chances Increase Wednesday Night
Tuesday afternoon temperatures are expected to reach between 53 and 63 degrees, with partly cloudy conditions and isolated sprinkles in northern portions of the forecast area.
Wednesday brings slightly warmer afternoon temperatures between 56 and 64 degrees before more widespread rain develops during the evening and overnight hours.
Rain is expected to continue into Thursday, Oct. 15, with breezy conditions and daytime highs ranging from 56 to 64 degrees.
Thursday night temperatures could fall between 35 and 42 degrees as cooler air settles across the region.
Frost Risk Increases Friday Night
Friday, Oct. 16, is expected to bring breezy but generally dry conditions, with afternoon highs between 52 and 58 degrees.
The bigger concern arrives Friday night into early Saturday, when clearing skies and lighter winds could allow temperatures to fall between 32 and 38 degrees.
These conditions may support areas of frost, particularly in colder and sheltered locations.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants, gardens or remaining warm season vegetation should monitor forecasts and consider protective measures before Friday night.
Warmer Conditions Return Saturday
Despite the chilly start, Saturday afternoon temperatures are expected to rebound into the 61 to 71 degree range, with breezy conditions and sunshine.
The forecast indicates that the frost risk may be relatively brief, although temperatures and frost coverage will depend on local conditions.
Residents across southeastern South Dakota should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates as the late week temperature drop approaches.
