SIOUX FALLS, SD – Residents across eastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa should prepare for widespread frost and potentially freezing temperatures Friday night, October 16, into Saturday morning. Clear skies and light winds could allow temperatures to fall near or below 32 degrees in some communities, threatening gardens and sensitive outdoor plants.
According to the National Weather Service's Sioux Falls area forecast graphics, Freeze Watches and Freeze Warnings are in effect for portions of the region as colder overnight conditions approach.
The greatest threat to vulnerable vegetation is expected overnight into early Saturday morning , when temperatures are forecast to reach their lowest levels.
Communities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Madison, Pipestone, Marshall, Worthington, Spencer and Storm Lake are among the locations highlighted in the regional forecast.
The National Weather Service map shows Freeze Watch areas covering portions of eastern South Dakota and nearby communities, while Freeze Warnings extend across parts of southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa.
However, conditions will vary by location, and not every community is expected to experience temperatures below freezing.
Even areas remaining slightly above 32 degrees could experience frost , particularly where skies remain clear and winds become light.
Residents with gardens, flowers and other cold sensitive vegetation are encouraged to take precautions before temperatures drop Friday evening.
Recommended protective measures include moving potted plants indoors or into garages, applying mulch around vulnerable vegetation and covering plants with sheets or suitable protective materials.
The National Weather Service also recommends watering plants ahead of freezing conditions, which can help slow heat loss from the soil.
Any coverings should be removed once temperatures rise Saturday morning.
Residents should also use caution with supplemental heat sources and avoid placing unsafe heating equipment near combustible materials.
Temperatures are expected to recover during the day Saturday, reducing the immediate frost threat.
