Sioux Falls, SD – Temperatures will surge into the 80s across parts of the Sioux Falls forecast area Friday, Oct. 9, before windy weekend conditions raise potential fire weather concerns and a sharp cooldown arrives Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Wednesday remains mostly sunny with highs from 68 to 73 degrees. Temperatures climb Thursday, when highs are forecast from 74 to 84.
A few sprinkles or very light showers could develop Thursday afternoon, mainly across northwestern Iowa. The NWS said any rainfall accumulation would be light.
Friday brings the warmest temperatures in the five day outlook. Mostly sunny and breezy conditions are expected, with highs ranging from 80 to 86 degrees.
The pattern begins changing Saturday. Highs fall to between 71 and 79 degrees as mostly sunny but windy conditions develop. The NWS said dry and breezy conditions over the weekend could lead to some fire weather concerns, although no specific fire weather alert is indicated in the outlook provided.
A much stronger temperature drop follows Sunday. Increasing clouds and breezy conditions are forecast, with highs reaching only 58 to 68 degrees.
That puts Sunday's coolest projected readings as much as 28 degrees below Friday's warmest forecast temperatures across the broader NWS forecast area, although the extremes may occur in different locations.
Residents should expect a rapid warmup through Friday, followed by increasing winds and cooler temperatures over the weekend. Saturday's dry, windy conditions bear watching for potential fire weather concerns, with a much cooler air mass settling into the region by Sunday.
