Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across southeastern South Dakota are facing a noticeable weather shift beginning Wednesday night, with rain gradually ending, temperatures falling toward freezing and a significant warmup expected to arrive by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, rain will continue Wednesday evening before slowly moving east overnight. Temperatures across the forecast area are expected to fall between 31 and 40 degrees, accompanied by northwest winds of 12 to 18 mph.
The combination of wet conditions, breezy winds and colder temperatures could make Wednesday night's travel uncomfortable, particularly for motorists traveling along Interstate 29 and Interstate 90.
Thursday will bring mostly cloudy skies and cooler conditions, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 41 to 49 degrees.
By Friday, some sunshine will return, although temperatures will remain relatively cool, with highs between 41 and 48 degrees.
The National Weather Service also warns that frost and freezing temperatures are becoming increasingly likely in many locations Friday and Saturday mornings.
Residents should consider protecting sensitive outdoor plants and preparing for chilly conditions during early morning commutes.
A significant improvement arrives Saturday, when mostly sunny skies are expected and afternoon highs climb into the 50s, potentially reaching 60 degrees in warmer locations.
Sunday looks even warmer, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures ranging from 56 to 63 degrees across the region.
The warming trend continues Monday, with highs forecast between 59 and 66 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
For Sioux Falls and surrounding Minnehaha County communities, the forecast offers a sharp contrast between chilly mornings and increasingly comfortable afternoons.
Residents planning outdoor activities this weekend should find improving conditions, especially Sunday, as sunshine returns and temperatures climb well above the freezing mark.
