Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across Minnehaha County are heading into a changing weather pattern featuring comfortable afternoons, increasingly chilly mornings and a late week return to freezing temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service, Sioux Falls should reach 57 degrees Sunday before climbing to approximately 61 degrees Monday, Nov. 9.
That early week warmth will gradually fade as temperatures decline toward Veterans Day and Thursday.
Monday Brings the Week's Warmest Weather Monday, Nov. 9, offers one of the best opportunities for outdoor activities before colder conditions return.
The National Weather Service expects mostly sunny skies and a high near 61 degrees.
South winds around 5 to 10 mph should shift northwest during the afternoon.
For residents finishing fall yardwork, the mild weather provides an opportunity to clear leaves, clean gutters and secure outdoor equipment.
However, temperatures fall sharply after sunset.
Monday night should reach approximately 35 degrees under mostly clear skies.
Keep a jacket available for evening activities.
Tuesday and Veterans Day Bring Gradual Cooling Tuesday, Nov. 10, remains mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching approximately 56 degrees.
Tuesday night brings increasing clouds and a low near 40 degrees.
Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, should remain mostly sunny with a high near 51 degrees.
That is 10 degrees cooler than Monday's expected afternoon temperature.
Residents attending outdoor Veterans Day ceremonies should prepare for brisk morning conditions.
Wednesday night temperatures could fall to approximately 32 degrees.
That puts Sioux Falls directly at the freezing mark, raising concerns for sensitive plants and exposed outdoor water fixtures.
Thursday Night Could Reach 30 Degrees The more noticeable cold arrives Thursday, Nov. 12.
Afternoon temperatures should only reach around 45 degrees despite mostly sunny skies.
By Thursday night, temperatures are projected to fall near 30 degrees.
That would mark a 31 degree difference from Monday's afternoon high.
Gardeners should consider protecting sensitive plants, particularly those still exposed following the mild start to November.
Residents should also check outdoor hoses and vulnerable plumbing.
Will Freezing Temperatures Create I 29 or I 90 Travel Problems? Drivers traveling Interstate 29, Interstate 90 and local Sioux Falls roads should remain aware of changing temperatures.
However, the current National Weather Service forecast does not indicate snow, freezing rain or measurable precipitation through Saturday.
That means widespread icy road conditions are not currently supported by the forecast.
Flash freezing can occur when existing moisture freezes on pavement, but no such event is specifically predicted for Sioux Falls.
Drivers should continue monitoring conditions if moisture develops before temperatures fall below freezing.
What Happens Heading Toward Thanksgiving? Friday, Nov. 13, brings sunshine and a modest recovery to approximately 49 degrees.
Friday night should remain partly cloudy with a low near 36 degrees.
Saturday, Nov. 14, offers another improvement, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 55 degrees.
While colder weather becomes increasingly relevant as Thanksgiving approaches, the supplied forecast does not identify a snowstorm or winter precipitation event for Sioux Falls.
Residents should use the remaining mild afternoons to complete outdoor preparations and monitor updated National Weather Service outlooks.
