Sumter, SC – A fire involving a travel trailer at a Sumter motel has led to the arrest of a 35 year old man now facing arson and burglary charges, according to a news release issued Wednesday by the Sumter County Sheriff 's Office.
According to the sheriff's office, the incident occurred Friday, October 23, at the America Inn on Broad Street in Sumter, South Carolina, where a travel trailer caught fire under circumstances that prompted a criminal investigation.
After firefighters extinguished the blaze, arson investigators working with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office began examining what caused the fire and whether criminal activity was involved.
Authorities subsequently arrested Desmond Montez Jackson, 35, charging him with second degree arson and first degree burglary.
Investigators have not publicly detailed how the fire allegedly started, what evidence led to Jackson's arrest or whether the travel trailer was occupied when the blaze began.
The sheriff's office also did not provide information about injuries, the extent of the property damage or the estimated financial losses associated with the incident.
Following his arrest, Jackson was transported to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.
Officials confirmed that Jackson remained in custody at the time of the October 28 news release. Updated bond information and future court dates were not included in the announcement.
The arrest follows an investigation into the motel fire, though authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged burglary.
The charges remain allegations, and Jackson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
