Liberty, SC – Three students have been arrested after authorities found a handgun in a student’s vehicle at Liberty High School on Thursday, officials announced.
According to the School District of Pickens County and Pickens County Sheriff ’s Office, administrators received information from a parent Thursday morning, Oct. 2, that prompted school officials and a school resource officer to investigate a concern involving three students.
During the investigation, law enforcement located a handgun inside one student’s vehicle in the school parking lot. The firearm was taken into law enforcement custody.
Officials said available information indicates the handgun had allegedly been transferred between students in vehicles while on campus.
Authorities emphasized that investigators found no information indicating the firearm entered the school building. Officials also said no threat was made with the weapon and there was no indication of a threat to students or staff connected with the incident.
Liberty High School continued operating on its normal schedule Thursday.
The sheriff’s office later announced that three arrests had been made. Because those arrested are juveniles, authorities said no additional identifying information would be released.
School administrators and law enforcement are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The district said disciplinary consequences will be handled under district policy and applicable law while noting that privacy laws limit what officials can disclose about individual students.
Officials credited the parent who initially contacted the school, along with others who provided information during the investigation, with helping authorities respond quickly.
The arrests are allegations, and the juveniles are presumed innocent unless adjudicated delinquent in court.
