Darlington, SC – Sheriff Michael August announced on Thursday, September 17, 2026, the termination and arrest of Matrese Grant, a former sergeant shift supervisor at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center. Grant is charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to inmates.
According to the sheriff's office , the investigation began on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after staff members reported illegal contraband entering the facility. Evidence revealed that Grant allegedly attempted to circumvent security cameras by hiding prohibited food items under a blanket, leaving them in a designated location for an inmate to retrieve on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Following an initial suspension without pay on Friday, September 11, 2026, investigators moved forward with the case, leading to Grant’s termination and arrest on September 17, 2026. She is currently being held at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center as she awaits a bond hearing.
Sheriff August reiterated his department's zero tolerance policy regarding facility contraband, noting that food items can be used to hide weapons or other dangerous materials. Officials stated the investigation remains active and that all individuals involved are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
