Columbia, SC – Residents across the South Carolina Midlands are heading into an unusually warm October week, with temperatures climbing as much as 10 degrees above normal and afternoon highs approaching 90 degrees before a cold front brings a significant cooldown this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Columbia, a warming trend begins Monday, October 12, as high pressure settles over the region. The weather pattern will bring dry conditions and increasingly warm afternoons through Thursday before cooler air arrives over the weekend.
Monday's temperatures are already expected to run above seasonal averages. Columbia is forecast to reach 83 degrees, while Orangeburg could climb to 84 degrees. Across the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia, highs are expected to reach 86 degrees.
The warming trend continues Tuesday, with highs reaching 85 degrees in Columbia, 86 degrees in Orangeburg and 87 degrees in Augusta.
By Wednesday and Thursday, the region could experience its warmest conditions of the week.
Wednesday's forecast calls for highs of 88 degrees in Columbia and Orangeburg, while Augusta reaches 89 degrees.
Thursday could bring even warmer conditions, with Augusta reaching 90 degrees, Orangeburg climbing to 89 degrees and Columbia approaching 88 degrees.
The NWS says temperatures throughout the week will generally run 5 to 10 degrees above seasonal averages.
Despite the warmth, widespread rainfall is not expected during the workweek. High pressure should maintain predominantly dry conditions across the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area.
However, the weather pattern is expected to change as the weekend approaches.
A cold front is forecast to move into the region this weekend , bringing significantly cooler temperatures after several days of unseasonable warmth.
The NWS has not provided specific weekend temperature readings in this outlook, but residents should prepare for a noticeable change from the near 90 degree conditions expected Thursday.
