Charleston, SC – Locally heavy rainfall could affect coastal South Carolina this weekend, with the greatest concern developing late Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday, peaking during the afternoon and evening. Most locations are expected to receive a half inch of rain or less Saturday, although isolated totals of 0.75 to 1 inch are possible.
Rain is expected to become more widespread and significant Sunday and Sunday night. The NWS forecasts widespread totals of at least 1 inch, with some locations potentially receiving 2 to 3 inches.
The period of greatest rain coverage is expected to begin late Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday morning. Embedded thunderstorms could accompany the widespread rainfall.
Forecasters also noted a risk of locally excessive rainfall Sunday and Sunday night, with the greatest concern across inland portions of the Charleston forecast area. The Weather Prediction Center outlook displayed by the NWS places inland areas in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall Sunday into Monday morning, while areas closer to the coast are generally under a Marginal Risk.
For the weekend overall, the NWS said rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are likely across the area, with locally higher amounts possible.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts through Sunday, particularly inland, as the location and magnitude of the heaviest rainfall become clearer.
