Providence, RI – Rhode Island residents preparing for the 2026 27 winter season could experience warmer than normal temperatures and increased precipitation, according to newly released federal seasonal outlooks. However, snowstorms, freezing temperatures and icy travel conditions remain possible across Providence, Warwick, Cranston and surrounding communities.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, outlooks issued Thursday, October 15, favor above normal temperatures and precipitation across Rhode Island from November 2026 through January 2027.
What does NOAA predict for Rhode Island this winter?
The temperature outlook places Rhode Island within an area showing approximately a 40% to 50% probability of above normal temperatures.
This means the three month period is more likely to average warmer than usual, although individual cold outbreaks remain possible.
The precipitation outlook also favors above normal conditions, with probabilities generally around 33% to 40%.
These projections include all forms of precipitation, meaning additional rainfall could contribute to a wetter winter without necessarily producing more snowfall.
Will Providence and Rhode Island see significant snow?
Snowfall remains a concern for Providence County and communities throughout the greater Providence metropolitan area.
Winter storms could still produce accumulating snow, freezing rain and dangerous driving conditions along Interstate 95, Interstate 195 and Route 146.
Coastal communities, including Newport and Narragansett, may also experience a mixture of rain and snow depending on temperatures during individual storms.
National Weather Service briefing materials indicate very strong El Niño conditions are highly likely to continue into winter.
El Niño can influence storm tracks and precipitation patterns across the United States, although its effects vary from year to year.
Forecasters emphasize that seasonal outlooks represent probabilities rather than guarantees.
For Rhode Island, the overall winter outlook favors warmer and wetter conditions, but significant snowstorms and periods of freezing weather remain possible.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as winter approaches.
