PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Open enrollment for 2027 health insurance begins Sunday, Nov. 1, giving Rhode Island residents an opportunity to compare plans, review premiums and determine whether they qualify for new state and federal financial assistance.
Rhode Islanders can enroll through HealthSource RI , the state's official health insurance marketplace. The 2027 open enrollment period runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027 .
Residents who want coverage in place for the beginning of the year are encouraged to act early. HealthSource RI says customers should select and pay for a plan by Dec. 23 to have coverage begin Jan. 1 and receive insurance cards before the new year. The final enrollment deadline is Jan. 31 for coverage beginning Feb. 1.
The biggest change for 2027 is a new state program designed to lower health insurance costs.
New Rhode Island health insurance assistance Beginning in January, the Rhode Island Marketplace Affordability Program, or RIMAP , will provide additional state financial assistance to qualifying HealthSource RI customers.
The program was created after enhanced federal premium tax credits expired and health insurance costs increased for many Rhode Islanders. HealthSource RI says average premiums across its customer population increased 101%, or about $111 per person per month , following the loss of the additional federal assistance.
RIMAP is expected to help more than 20,000 eligible current, former and future HealthSource RI customers afford health coverage in 2027. For some lower income households, the state assistance will be available in addition to federal premium tax credits.
Another approximately 10,000 Rhode Island households are expected to see renewal notices showing their 2027 monthly health insurance costs averaging about $110 less than in 2026 because of changes affecting silver plan pricing and federal subsidies, according to HealthSource RI.
What Rhode Island residents should check Providence area residents and consumers statewide should compare monthly premiums, deductibles, prescription drug coverage, out of pocket costs and whether their preferred doctors and hospitals remain in network.
Consumers should also review their eligibility for financial assistance before automatically renewing an existing plan.
HealthSource RI says 8 in 10 of its customers currently receive some form of financial assistance , making income and household information particularly important when comparing 2027 health insurance plans.
Residents who selected lower premium bronze plans during 2026 may also want to shop again. Bronze plan enrollment rose from 20% to 32% in 2026, but those plans generally carry higher deductibles and out of pocket costs than silver or gold coverage.
HealthSource RI offers an online plan comparison calculator where consumers can estimate premiums, financial assistance and potential out of pocket costs for different plans.
Residents can enroll online through HealthSource RI or receive free assistance from the marketplace's network of more than 100 trained Navigators across Rhode Island.
