Providence, RI – Residents across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts should prepare for potentially significant flooding concerns Friday, November 6, as a widespread rainstorm threatens to produce 2 to 4 inches of rainfall, with isolated locations possibly receiving as much as 5 to 6 inches.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, periods of heavy rain are expected throughout Friday and Friday night, creating an increased risk of poor drainage flooding and standing water in urban areas.
The greatest rainfall totals are forecast across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, including communities near Providence, Plymouth, New Bedford and the South Coast.
Forecasters expect widespread rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in these areas through Saturday, November 7.
However, isolated pockets of heavier precipitation could push totals to 5 or 6 inches, particularly where persistent bands of rain develop.
The National Weather Service's latest rainfall map indicates approximately 3 to 4 inches across portions of southeastern Massachusetts and southern Rhode Island.
Areas around Boston could receive 2 to 3 inches, while communities farther north and west are expected to experience lower rainfall totals.
Across Connecticut, rainfall amounts generally decrease moving west, with approximately 1 to 1.5 inches forecast near Hartford and New Haven.
The heavy rainfall could overwhelm storm drains, produce standing water on roadways and create hazardous driving conditions during periods of intense precipitation.
Motorists traveling along Interstate 95, Interstate 195 and other major routes should remain alert for ponding water and reduced visibility.
Residents in flood prone neighborhoods should monitor local conditions closely, especially during heavier rainfall Friday afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service expects the widespread rain to gradually diminish Saturday as the system moves away from southern New England.
Although rainfall amounts will vary by location, the potential for isolated totals approaching 6 inches makes this a significant weather event for the hardest hit communities.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways and continue monitoring updated forecasts and official weather alerts at weather.gov/boston.
