SCRANTON, PA – Residents across northeastern Pennsylvania and portions of central New York face the possibility of scattered severe thunderstorms Friday, October 16, as a powerful cold front approaches the region. Damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado are among the potential threats, with the greatest concern developing during the afternoon and early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday afternoon, primarily between noon and 6 p.m. EDT, as the cold front moves through the region.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of northeastern Pennsylvania under a Slight Risk, Level 2 of 5, for severe weather.
This includes areas around Scranton, Wilkes Barre and nearby communities, where scattered severe thunderstorms could develop.
Farther north, portions of central New York, including areas near Binghamton, Ithaca and Oneonta, are under a Marginal Risk, Level 1 of 5.
Forecasters say a squall line is expected to develop along the advancing cold front, potentially bringing thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds.
An isolated tornado is also possible , although the primary concern remains locally damaging wind gusts.
Strong thunderstorms could bring down tree limbs, damage unsecured outdoor objects and cause localized power outages.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor items and monitor weather conditions throughout Friday afternoon.
Motorists traveling along Interstate 81, Interstate 84 and other regional highways should remain alert for sudden heavy rain, reduced visibility and strong crosswinds as thunderstorms move through.
People with outdoor plans during the afternoon should identify a sturdy indoor shelter and be prepared to move inside quickly if severe weather warnings are issued.
The greatest severe weather potential is expected to diminish as the cold front passes through the region Friday evening.
