Pittsburgh, PA – Pittsburgh will finish September with 5.03 inches of rain, ranking the month as the city’s 18th wettest September on record.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, no additional precipitation is expected until Thursday, after September ends. That means the 5.03 inch total reported Tuesday evening should stand as the final rainfall amount for the month.
The September total is 1.83 inches above the 1991 2020 normal of 3.20 inches. Pittsburgh had recorded 3.17 inches during September 2025, according to the NWS climate report.
Despite the unusually wet month, September 2026 remained well below Pittsburgh’s record. The wettest September produced 10.08 inches of precipitation in 1945, the weather service said.
Rainfall has also been running above normal for the year. Through Sept. 29, Pittsburgh had received 38.65 inches of precipitation since Jan. 1. The normal amount through the same point is 30.98 inches, putting 2026 at 7.67 inches above normal so far.
Tuesday itself was dry as of 5 p.m., with no measurable precipitation reported. The temperature reached a high of 70 degrees, matching the normal high for the date, while the morning low was 59 degrees, 9 degrees above normal.
The NWS climate record for Pittsburgh extends back to 1871, while current climate normals are based on the 1991 2020 period.
With no more rain expected before September closes, the city’s 5.03 inch total is expected to remain unchanged. The next opportunity for precipitation comes Thursday, according to the weather service.
