PITTSBURGH, PA – A sharp temperature drop could bring near freezing conditions to Pittsburgh this weekend, with overnight lows approaching 34 degrees Saturday night as a colder weather pattern develops across Pennsylvania and much of the eastern United States Oct. 17 21.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, temperatures are expected to reach 82 degrees Tuesday before falling to a high near 52 Saturday. The 30 degree decline in afternoon temperatures signals a significant shift toward colder October weather.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center also favors below normal temperatures across western Pennsylvania during Oct. 17 21, with probabilities generally reaching 50 60% across portions of the region.
The transition begins after several days of unusually warm weather.
Tuesday is expected to bring sunshine and a high near 82 degrees, with southwest wind gusts reaching 25 mph. Wednesday could reach 78 degrees before showers become widespread during the afternoon.
Rain chances reach 80% Wednesday, with showers continuing into Wednesday night. Additional showers are possible Thursday before rain becomes likely Thursday night and Friday.
Friday's high is forecast near 69 degrees, followed by a rapid cooldown as temperatures fall toward 40 degrees overnight.
By Saturday, mostly sunny skies are expected, but afternoon temperatures may reach only 52 degrees. Saturday night could bring a low near 34 degrees, raising the possibility of frost in colder locations.
The colder pattern could also renew interest in early season snow across higher elevations of Pennsylvania and neighboring Appalachian areas. However, the current Pittsburgh forecast does not include snow, and NOAA's longer range outlook does not establish specific snowfall probabilities.
The Climate Prediction Center favors below normal precipitation across western Pennsylvania Oct. 17 21, suggesting colder conditions may not necessarily produce widespread precipitation.
Pittsburgh residents should prepare for a dramatic transition from Tuesday's 82 degree warmth to weekend temperatures in the 30s and 50s, with below normal conditions favored through Oct. 21.
