Pittsburgh, PA – November 2026 is approaching, and Pittsburgh's weather records from last year reveal an interesting contradiction. Despite experiencing one of its colder Novembers in more than a century, the city received very little measurable snowfall, demonstrating that cold temperatures alone do not guarantee a snowy start to winter.
According to the National Weather Service's November 2025 climate summary for Pittsburgh, the city recorded just 0.5 inches of snowfall during the month, compared with a historical November normal of 2.4 inches. That represents a deficit of 1.9 inches, or approximately 79% below normal.
The report also ranked November 2025 as Pittsburgh's 33rd coldest November in a 151 year period of record.
A Cold November With Surprisingly Little Snow Pittsburgh's average temperature during November 2025 was 41.5 degrees, approximately 1.7 degrees below normal.
The month's average high temperature was 50.4 degrees, while the average low was 32.7 degrees.
Temperatures reached 65 degrees at their warmest and dropped to 23 degrees at their coldest.
The National Weather Service recorded 13 days with low temperatures at or below freezing.
Despite those colder conditions, snowfall remained limited.
Pittsburgh experienced only two days with at least 0.1 inches of measurable snow during the month.
The largest daily accumulation was just 0.4 inches.
The monthly snowfall total ranked tied for the 44th lowest November snowfall in the station's 145 year snowfall record.
Why Cold Weather Didn't Produce More Snow One important factor was the amount of precipitation Pittsburgh received.
The National Weather Service recorded 2.08 inches of total precipitation during November 2025, compared with a historical normal of 2.86 inches.
That represents a deficit of 0.78 inches.
The report ranked November 2025 as the 67th lowest November precipitation total in 151 years.
However, limited precipitation alone does not explain every snowfall outcome.
The timing of incoming weather systems, atmospheric temperatures and available moisture all influence whether precipitation reaches the ground as rain or snow.
Even when temperatures frequently fall below freezing overnight, accumulating snowfall requires the appropriate conditions during precipitation events.
Pittsburgh's November 2025 weather illustrates why a colder than normal month can still produce substantially less snow than average.
What November 2025 Means for 2026 For residents across Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding Western Pennsylvania communities, last November's records provide useful perspective as another winter season approaches.
However, historical observations cannot reliably predict whether November 2026 will bring more snowfall.
A colder month does not necessarily mean a snowier month, just as a relatively mild November can still experience accumulating snow when conditions align.
Residents should monitor National Weather Service forecasts for changing temperatures, approaching precipitation systems and the potential for rain to transition into snow.
Last November demonstrated that Pittsburgh can experience an unusually cold month without substantial snowfall.
As November 2026 approaches, will Pittsburgh see another cold but relatively snow free November, or could accumulating snow become a bigger part of the early winter season?
