Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Fall begins Tuesday with scattered showers returning across the Pittsburgh region and afternoon temperatures holding in the 60s.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, most rain was moving out of the area by 2 a.m. Tuesday, although showers were expected to linger along the West Virginia ridges through dawn. Scattered showers will redevelop across the region during the day.
Rain chances vary considerably by location and time. Pittsburgh's probability of precipitation rises from 25% early Tuesday to 55% around midday before declining Tuesday night. Farther north, rain chances reach 60% in Butler and 65% around Franklin during portions of Tuesday.
Communities east and south of Pittsburgh will also contend with periods of rain. Latrobe reaches a 60% precipitation chance Tuesday, while Uniontown peaks around 60%. Morgantown, West Virginia, reaches 50% during the day.
Motorists should be prepared for wet pavement where showers develop, particularly during Tuesday's daytime travel. Conditions can vary over short distances with scattered precipitation, so drivers should check road and weather conditions before longer trips.
The arrival of astronomical fall will also come with noticeably cool temperatures. The Weather Service said afternoon highs Tuesday will remain cool under cloudy skies. Its regional temperature graphic generally shows maximum temperatures in the lower to upper 60s Tuesday, with readings remaining in the 60s Wednesday and Thursday.
Additional rain chances remain in parts of the region Wednesday, including areas south and west of Pittsburgh, while some northern communities turn substantially drier.
The first days of fall will therefore feel the part across western Pennsylvania: cloudy, cool and periodically damp. Residents should keep rain gear nearby Tuesday and watch for changing conditions as scattered showers redevelop during the day.
