Pittsburgh, PA – Thanksgiving travelers across Pennsylvania may be watching for early season snow as a long range holiday outlook points toward colder, more winterlike conditions in parts of the Ohio Valley. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and State College could experience different weather patterns as Thanksgiving approaches Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest forecast region could see scattered snow showers or flurries from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day. The forecast zone includes neighboring Ohio but does not explicitly identify Pennsylvania.
That distinction matters. The regional outlook cannot be treated as a specific snow prediction for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or other Pennsylvania communities.
Western Pennsylvania can experience early season snow when colder air moves across the Great Lakes. Areas north of Pittsburgh, particularly closer to Lake Erie, are more susceptible to lake effect snowfall.
Central Pennsylvania, including State College and higher elevations, can also experience November snow, while Philadelphia's lower elevation and southeastern location often produce different early season conditions.
NOAA's broader November outlook favors above normal temperatures across portions of the Great Lakes region. However, a warmer than average monthly pattern does not rule out occasional freezing temperatures or snow showers.
For Thanksgiving travelers, I 76 between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, I 80 across northern Pennsylvania and I 79 in western Pennsylvania are important routes to monitor if winter weather develops. No specific snow related disruptions have been established for those highways.
The Farmers' Almanac's projection remains a long range regional outlook rather than a confirmed forecast. It provides no snowfall totals or precise timing for Pennsylvania cities.
Could Pennsylvania see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Historically, yes. However, the available regional projection does not establish whether snow will affect Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or State College during the holiday.
Residents should monitor National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for updated temperatures, precipitation types and travel conditions.
