Pittsburgh, PA – Pennsylvania residents hoping to catch the brightest autumn colors may have a limited window this weekend as a newly updated statewide foliage map shows peak conditions across many lower elevation communities, while leaves in higher elevations are already fading.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources released its latest fall foliage report Thursday, October 22, covering conditions through Wednesday, October 28.
The update highlights a significant shift in the state's autumn landscape as peak colors move through lower elevations.
Peak Fall Colors Spread Across Pennsylvania
The latest foliage map shows widespread peak conditions across portions of western, central and northeastern Pennsylvania.
Areas highlighted in orange indicate peak color, while red regions represent locations where foliage remains attractive but is already declining.
Much of northern Pennsylvania has moved beyond its most vibrant period, with some higher elevation locations approaching the end of the foliage season.
Meanwhile, southeastern Pennsylvania remains behind other regions, with several areas still approaching peak color.
This Weekend Could Be a Key Viewing Opportunity
For residents around Pittsburgh and surrounding southwestern Pennsylvania communities, the latest report suggests many locations are experiencing peak or declining foliage conditions.
Those planning scenic drives, park visits or outdoor photography trips may want to take advantage of the remaining color before additional leaves fall.
The National Weather Service emphasized that higher elevations have already passed peak, even though some colorful foliage remains.
