Pittsburgh, PA – Pennsylvania’s fall colors are beginning to take shape this week, with Indiana County approaching peak foliage and northern portions of the state showing some of the most noticeable changes.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has released its annual fall foliage maps, with the latest outlook covering Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Most counties across the Pittsburgh forecast region are only beginning to turn, the weather service said Saturday. However, Indiana County stands out as the first in the region to approach peak color.
Higher ridgelines and counties farther north are expected to follow shortly as October progresses.
The state foliage map shows a broad section of northern Pennsylvania in the “approaching peak color” category this week. Much of western and central Pennsylvania remains in the earlier stages of the seasonal transition.
That means travelers planning an early October leaf peeping trip may find more developed colors by heading north or toward higher elevations, while many other areas still have additional changes ahead.
Pennsylvania’s foliage season does not reach every community simultaneously. Elevation, local weather and location can influence when leaves transition from green into the familiar yellow, orange and red colors associated with autumn.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources releases updated foliage information during the season to help residents and visitors track the progression.
For the Pittsburgh region, this week’s update suggests the fall display is just getting underway, with increasingly colorful conditions expected as October continues.
